Vehicle found down an embankment, in a ditch. Driver charged with impaired

On June 24, 2018 at 11:23 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members received a call of a motor vehicle in the ditch area down an embankment north of the City of Elliot Lake, Ont. on Highway 639.

Police attended the area and located the vehicle. The vehicle was still running, lights were on, music playing and a male was sitting in the driver's seat. 

A strong odour of alcoholic beverage was detected emanating from his breath. He was subsequently arrested, his driver's license was suspended and his vehicle was towed and impounded.

Richard Allen, 74 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ont. was charged with:

  • Care or control over 80 mgs, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Care or control while impaired (alcohol), contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake, Ont. on Aug. 7, 2018.

The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive. Report impaired drivers. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.
