Impaired charges laid after Hwy. 17 crash kills Wisconsin senior

Impaired and dangerous driving charges have been laid following a Sunday afternoon head-on collision on Highway 17 in the Nairn Centre area that killed an American senior.

Emergency services, including the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services and the Nairn-Hyman Fire Department, responded to the collision in Nairn-Hyman township shortly after 2 p.m. on May 5.

An eastbound vehicle collided head-on with a westbound vehicle.

A 73-year-old from the state of Wisconsin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other individuals were transported to a local hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

Sasha Pan, a 32-year-old resident of Warren, Ont., is charged with: 

  • Dangerous operation causing death
  • Dangerous operation causing bodily harm
  • Operation while impaired causing death
  • Operation while impaired causing bodily harm

The accused was held in custody to appear pending a bail court appearance today in Sudbury.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (T.I.M.E.) team.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Pan is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
