TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE - On April 29, 2018, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties on Highway 17 within the Township of the North Shore.

Shortly before noon, police observed a westbound vehicle travelling at an excessive high rate of speed. The officer locked in a speed of over 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) over the posted 90 km/h speed limit. The officer turned his cruiser around at which time he proceeded to follow the vehicle that was travelling at an even higher rate of speed of over 160 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

A traffic stop was initiated and after the completion to the investigation the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

As a result of the investigation, Lucas Simankevicius, 25 years of age from Tofino, B.C. was charged with race motor vehicle-excessive speed, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on June 20, 2018.
