OTTAWA - Carol Hughes, MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing made the following statement in response to the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the prorogation of Parliament:
“Yesterday, in the face of mounting pressure from all sides, the prime minister resigned, and prorogued Parliament until March 24th. Canadians have shown that they no longer have faith in his leadership. Through a cost-of-living crisis he hasn’t effectively dealt with, a housing shortage he has failed to make an impact on, and a climate crisis he has been too slow to act on, he hasn’t lived up to the “sunny ways” he promised.
"But rather than read the writing on the wall months ago – when New Democrats scrapped the Supply and Confidence Agreement, or when his own caucus started to revolt, or when his finance minister publicly resigned hours ahead of the Fall Economic Statement – he stood defiant. That is, until the last possible minute, mere weeks before the threat of tariffs from the incoming Trump administration could harm Canadians even further.
"Proroguing the House at this point, just like every time Stephen Harper did it, is cynical and self-serving. It only serves the Liberal Party. Conservative slogans and their cut-and-gut agenda aren’t going to help Canadians when they need it most. We’ve been there, done that, it didn’t work. Canadians deserve an NDP government who looks out for their best interests, one who will work to improve public health care, and fight the kind of corporate greed that leaves working families behind."
