Mark Hartman was named interim CEO at Health Sciences North.

A national search is underway for a replacement for Dominic Giroux as the new president and CEO of Health Sciences North, the largest hospital in Northern Ontario.

Giroux's last day at HSN was June 15, the same week as the hospital's annual general meeting. It was Giroux's fifth and final report to the hospital board.

Giroux left HSN after five and a half years in the top job there. He has accepted an offer to become president and CEO of Hôpital Montfort in Ottawa, his hometown. His new appointment takes effect on July 31.

The hospital board has named Mark Hartman as the interim CEO and president. He will continue in that role until such time as a new chief executive for the hospital and the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) is hired. The hospital communications office said that is expected to happen in the fall. Dr. Robert Ohle will serve as Interim CEO of HSNRI.

Hartman has an extensive history in Sudbury and at HSN. Hartman began working as a Radiation Therapist at the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre when he arrived in Sudbury from Australia in 1992. He then entered into various management positions, first supervising radiation treatment planning then managing the radiation treatment program. Between 2000 and 2004 Hartman was director of the $44M Cancer Centre capital expansion project, said a biography posted on the HSN website.

Prior to becoming the Vice President, Hartman was the program’s Administrative Director. He had administrative responsibility for regional programs providing direct and indirect clinical services in Systemic Treatment, Supportive Care, Radiation Treatment, Palliative Care, Preventive Oncology and Surgical Oncology. He has recently completed a Masters in Business Administration through Athabasca University, said the hospital website.

Also in announcing Hartman's and Ohle's interim roles, the HSN and HSNRI boards of directors determined that the Interim CEOs are not eligible to be candidates for a permanent appointment in those roles.
