Local woman gives back with business

Elliot Lake woman transforms struggles of making ends meet to thriving business that helps her community and her family

Robin Hilts, 39, is a woman who knows the struggles of making ends meet. As a single mother on social assistance, she faced the daily challenge of providing for her family and putting food on the table, while taking care of her father who was in poor health.

Instead of letting her circumstances define her, she decided to take matters into her own hands and create a business that would not only support her family but also give back to her community.

“I was newly single, pregnant with my son, and taking care of my dad who was ill,” she said, “It was extremely stressful and so time-consuming I couldn’t work.”

Facing health issues herself, Hilts decided a home-based business would suit her and the needs of her family best. “I researched a few home-based and online businesses before I decided on the consignment store,” explains the entrepreneur.

Little Britches Consignment launched on Oct. 25, 2022. It offers pre-loved clothing for ages 0-16.

“Most of my consignors are looking to earn a little cash, I have a 50/50 split," she said. "For the online shoppers, they are like me, looking for affordable clothing at a decent price.”

Despite facing initial skepticism and doubts from those around her, Hilts persevered and worked tirelessly to make her business a success. “I really had no idea what I was doing at first. I learned to build a website, and learned how to do marketing,” She spent countless hours sourcing clothing, learning about by-laws, setting up displays, and marketing to attract new customers.

Through hard work and determination, she was able to turn her small home-based business into a thriving success.

“With the cost of everything going up, I wanted to help others save a few dollars because children’s clothing isn’t cheap,” admits the business owner. “Online means no additional cost for a bricks and mortar, and my overhead stays low. Which means I can pass the savings onto my clients.” The shop ships Canada-wide and delivers locally for a small fee.

The online shop quickly gained popularity in the community, as Hilts’ eye for quality items and affordable prices drew in a lot of internet customers.

One of the things that sets her apart from other entrepreneurs is her commitment to community. As a mother herself, she knows the struggles that many families face in providing for their children. That's why she makes it a priority to donate to local charities and organizations that support families in need.

Through her devotion and hard work, Hilts has gone from struggling to put food on the table to running a successful business that not only supports her family but also gives back to her community.

Little Britches Consignment has become a staple to her customers.

“Most of my consignors have been with me from the beginning and I get a lot of repeat customers,” she said.

As a mother, business owner, and community advocate, Hilts is an inspiration.

Little Britches Consignment is not just a business, it’s a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of giving back to those in need.
