The Dean Lake Bridge in Huron Shores was closed today for an indefinite amount of time due to safety concerns.

"The Dean Lake Road Bridge was closed to all traffic this morning following a professional recommendation from Kresin Engineering Corporation," said Huron Shores CAO Natashia Roberts in an email.

"This decision was made to ensure the safety of all residents and travellers after an engineering review identified significant structural deterioration in the bridge."

KEC’s assessment of the structure just east of Iron Bridge was based on a review of load evaluation reports, biennial inspection reports, and steel and concrete testing results, said a press release from the municipality.

Roberts said the closure was implemented immediately due to the urgent nature of the safety concerns.

"While we understand the inconvenience this may cause, public safety is our top priority," she added.

The future of the bridge, including possible inspections or rehabilitation, will be considered at the upcoming council meeting on Jan. 15.

No specific timeline has been established for the reopening of the bridge. In the meantime, traffic must now follow the alternative route from Highway 17 to Eley Road, following the detour signs.

Roberts confirmed the detour adds approximately 17 km to any trip east from Dean Lake Road. She said there are 129 permanent residents in the Dean Lake area.
