Long-time Blind River councillor Ken Kennedy thanked the community and previous councils for the work he has seen done in his 27 years as a councillor.

Kennedy made the comments during the last meeting of council he will be attending as a municipal councillor Monday evening. In the October municipal election, he decided not to run.

“I just want to thank everybody in the municipality and staff that I had 27 magnificent years on council,” he said. “It was an honour to serve the municipality. We got a lot of stuff done with two annexations, new water plant, new fire hall, we sold our mobile park, the medical centre – there’s been a lot.”

Kennedy’s only drawback during the terms he served was complaints about council work on social media.

“It really bothered me about social media that people can sit in their homes and take pot shots at us and we can’t defend ourselves,” he said. “They can put stuff on the internet and everybody agrees ….  but they don’t sit on committees.”

He said he refrained from responding to complaints on social media.

“It gets a bit melancholy out there but they won’t come to a meeting and ask about stuff,” he added. “That’s the only negative thing I have in 27 years and I guess that’s not too bad.”

“I’m happy about the way our municipality turned out and happy with our staff.”

The new council will be sworn in on Dec. 3.
