If any rooms in your home could use a bit of a refresh, start small. A total overhaul isn’t necessary as there are plenty of affordable accents to choose from.
Adding just a couple of new pieces can go a long way toward creating a fresh look and feel. The following are perfect examples of items that can transform your space without damaging your wallet.
Accent pillows
If you’re getting a little tired of a beloved sofa or chair, you can always change up the look with a new accent pillow. It’s an inexpensive way to add colour and texture, and if you coordinate it with a few other small accessories, it can create a surprisingly effective change. Sometimes all it takes is using a couple of books from your existing collection, a candle or a picture that has similar colour tones in it and all of a sudden you have a very intentional-looking vignette.
The Standon Pillow is a modern addition to any space; gray and white with a nubby texture, it has a cool, laidback look that captures the spirit of the times. Because it is neutral in colour, you could add this to any room and it wouldn’t look out of place. Buy two or pair it with a complementary pillow, such as the Rowcher Pillow, and it will fit in (and look great!) absolutely anywhere.
If you’re in the mood to add a bit of whimsy to your décor, have fun with the McKile Pillow, sure to be a hit with dog-lovers, or the Kastel Accent Pillow to bring a bit of sunshine indoors.
An area rug
Never underestimate the power of a good floor covering, even if it’s just a modest-sized rug.
You can get a lovely area rug to soften up your space for under a couple hundred dollars. These are just a few of the options available, and they both qualify as stylish and affordable updates. The Hebruns area rug looks both modern and exotic. It features shades of blue and beige, is flannel-printed and machine-washable, for easy care.
The Gerdie rug is a cream, gray and charcoal combo that is very contemporary looking. Its abstract design and sophisticated colourway would look great in an already modern space, but because of its neutral colours it could suit a more traditional or transitional space equally as well. No matter where you place it, it would make a nice update and help any room feel more current.
Lighting
We tend to use our spaces in the same way for years on end. Why not change things up and play with your furniture arrangement? Put an armchair into a previously unused corner and create a cosy reading nook with a floor lamp.
The crystal and chrome-tone metal in the Joaquin Floor Lamp (along with the crisp white drum shade) would make a nice addition to an elegant bedroom. The Bernadate Floor Lamp would complement any coastal chic or modern farmhouse space, with its whitewash finish and detailed knob design. The high-style Makeika Floor Lamp is made of a black-finished metal and has a sleek, contemporary look that would be perfect for a home office, library or media room.
Planters
Bringing greenery into the home is always a great addition. Live plants can improve the quality of your indoor air and introduce colour, texture and vibrancy to any space. Make your plant purchase look intentional with a planter (or two) that complements your design style.
The Donish Planter (Set of 2) is striking, with an antique brass finish and black finish metal legs. This pair brings shine, texture and colour all on their own, before you’ve even added a favourite plant to them! The Dorcey Planter (Set of 2) has a natural look, with white pots and wood legs; they have a cool, mid-century modern appeal. Another stylish option is the black and gold tone-finish Tobins Wall Planter (Set of 3). This is an instant way to update any wall in your space and can be used indoors and out.
If you don’t have much of a green thumb, don’t let that stop you: no one will ever know if you have fresh or faux flowers or greenery in your pots.
