Established in 2008, the Algoma Paddlers is more than just a club. It's a community for new and experienced paddlers to meet fellow outdoor enthusiasts and explore the surrounding beautiful waterways with others.
"It is like having a friend to encourage you and help get you out the door and onto the water," says club president Cindy Goytan-Lipinski.
This July, the Algoma Paddlers with the Town of Thessalon is offering an adult safe kayaking and youth (9+) paddling course focusing on flatwater kayaking taught by qualified Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) instructors.
"There is no better way to get out and feel a connection to nature than by paddling a canoe or kayak," says Goytan-Lipinski. "At the same time, it is important to learn the necessary skills and knowledge to do it safely. Never underestimate the power of nature."
Whether you are new to the sport or just need to practice some paddle skills, Goytan-Lipinski says several well-qualified companies offer Paddle Canada or ORCKA courses in kayaking and canoeing.
The Algoma club is entirely run by volunteers, and funds are raised from memberships, grants, donations, and community events, such as the 36' Voyageur canoe rides. This year, there are two community events where the public can experience a ride in one of the voyageur canoes: Elliot Lake Heritage Days on June 30th and the Thessalon car show on August 17th.
All club events are posted on the Algoma paddler's blog, Facebook and members on record receive updates and reminders of upcoming paddles.
