Thieves attempt to steal an air conditioner from an electronics recycling bin at a business on Kilborn Way in the City of Elliot Lake.

On July 12, 2024 shortly before 7 p.m., a business owner attended their business on Kilborn Way with a friend. Once on the property they observed an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) approaching them with two suspects on board carrying an air conditioning unit. The business owner blocked the ATV from leaving the property with their pickup truck they were in.

Words were exchanged and one of the suspects who is known to police [is alleged to have] assaulted the owner's friend, punched the pickup truck's mirror while fleeing the scene on the ATV and may have been possibly impaired by drug. Police reviewed the business video footage and shortly after 8:15 p.m., located the suspect ATV at a residence on Chalmers Cresent. The driver was subsequently arrested outside that residence and transported to Elliot Lake detachment for further testing and once at there the accused refused to comply with the Drug Recognition Expert's demand.

The owner of the ATV was later advised their ATV was impounded for 45 days.

As a result, the driver Kevin Lee, 51 years of age from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Failure or Refusal to comply with demand
  • Driving while under suspension (two counts)
  • Drive non-passenger ATV with a passenger

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Aug. 15, 2024.
