Police say they seized about 50,000 unmarked cigarettes from a vehicle after a traffic stop.

MAGNETAWAN FIRST NATION — The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a Thessalon man has been charged with speeding and possession of unmarked cigarettes after a traffic stop Friday morning between Sudbury and Parry Sound.

On March 14 at around 7:55 a.m., police stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 69 in Magnetawan First Nation.

The vehicle was travelling 124 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone, according to a police news release.

During the investigation, police located and seized about 50,000 unmarked cigarettes from the vehicle.

A 69-year-old man from Thessalon was charged with:

  • Speeding 1 - 49 Km/h over posted limit
  • Purchase unmarked cigarettes for sale
  • Possess unmarked cigarettes

The driver was issued a provincial summons and is to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on July 15.

Police said that as per OPP policy, the accused's name was not released because he is charged with a provincial offence only, and not a criminal code charge.
