Traffic complaint leads to impaired charges

ESPANOLA, ONT. - One person has been arrested and charged following a traffic complaint.

On July 5, 2024, shortly after 4 p.m., the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a vehicle unable to maintain its lane. Police located the vehicle on Centre Street and conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine the driver had consumed alcohol beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Benjaman Lewis, 40 years old from Michipicoten First Nation has been charged with:

  • operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Aug. 6, 2024.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
