Sudbury driver charged following crash on Manitoulin Island

One person has been arrested and charged following a single vehicle collision.

On July 13, 2024, shortly before 2 a.m., the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 540 in northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. Police arrived on scene and determined there were no injuries for the lone occupant of the vehicle. Upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine that the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Jacob LeClair, 19 years old, from Sudbury has been charged with:

  • operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • breach of probation order (P.O.A.)
  • young driver - B.A.C. above zero

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Aug. 27, 2024.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative drivers licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
