A 20-year-old Greater Sudbury man is facing charges following what Greater Sudbury police are referring to as a ‘hate-motivated assault’ on Cedar Street at 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 15.

In a media release, police reported that two males assaulted two other males in an “unprovoked attack.”

During the assault, police report that one of the suspects assaulted racial slurs while one of the suspects “removed a garment of religious significance” from one of the victims.

The victims sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident, according to police.

Due to the hate-based nature of this incident, the incident has been assigned to a detective in Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Major Crime Section of their Criminal Investigations Division who is specifically trained as a hate-bias/hate-motivated crime investigator.

A 20-year-old Greater man was arrested without incident on Dec. 19 and charged with Assault x 2, Assault Causing Bodily Harm and Robbery.

He was released to appear in court on Jan. 22.

A second 20-year-old Greater Sudbury man was arrested without incident on Dec. 21, charged with Assault and released to appear in court on Jan 22.
