THESSALON FIRST NATION - On Nov. 6, 2017, shortly after 8:30 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment received a call for service where a female reported her boyfriend's vehicle was stolen overnight from his residence on Biish Road on the Thessalon First Nation Territory.
Shortly after 10 a.m., police responded to a fail to remain single motor vehicle collision on McLean Road in the Municipality of Huron Shores. The vehicle was confirmed to be the same vehicle that was stolen earlier from Thessalon First Nation.
Police observed skidding/sliding tire tracks indicating that the vehicle was travelling northbound on McLean Road and lost control entering a ditch on west side of the road then colliding with a telephone pole. Police re-attended the residence on Biish Road to advise the male owner that his vehicle was located.
Investigation determined the male's girlfriend had (allegedly) taken the vehicle the night prior. She then got into the motor vehicle collision and returned back to her boyfriend's and advised him to claim the vehicle was stolen.
As a result of the investigation, Tamara Goodmurphy, 20 years of age from Thessalon, Ont. was charged with:
- Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
- Public mischief, contrary to section 140(1) of the CC;
- Drive while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
- Fail to remain, contrary to section 200(1)(a) of the HTA; and with
- Fail to report accident, contrary to section 199(1) of the HTA.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Jan. 4, 2018.
Daniel Simon, 32 years of age from Thessalon First Nation, Ont. was charged with:
- Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); and with
- Public mischief, contrary to section 140(1) of the CC.
