Speeding leads to multiple charges, 45-day impound for Alberta Driver

Police say the 39-year-old was going more than 160 km/h on Highway 17 near Blind River

TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE — Driver caught speeding at more than 160 kms/hr.

On Dec. 31, 2024, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) unit was on traffic patrol on Highway 17, east of Blind River. At approximately 10:30 p.m., police observed a vehicle speeding at an excessive high rate of speed as it approached the town of Algoma Mills. A traffic stop was initiated on Highway 17, between Lauzon Village Road and Highway 538, within the Township of the North Shore.

A query revealed that the driver had multiple outstanding warrants and was unlicensed. Assisting with the traffic stop were officers from the East Algoma OPP Detachment and the Mississauga First Nation Police Service. The driver was arrested and transported to the Blind River detachment for processing. The car was impounded for 45 days.

As a result, Thomas Ste-Croix, 39 years-old from Cold Lake, Alberta, was charged with:

  • Operation while prohibited under Criminal Code
  • Failure to comply with release order-other than to attend court (two counts)
  • Drive motor vehicle-perform stunt-excessive speed
  • Driving while under suspension

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on Jan. 1, 2025, and was remanded into custody.
