Local man facing multiple vehicle theft, fraud charges

The man is accused of taking vehicles to complete work on it and never returning it

Police arrest person with numerous outstanding warrants.

On Jan. 29, 2025, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a person at a retail store on Highway 108 in relation to numerous previously reported offences and warrants for their arrest. 

On Jan. 26, 2025, a complainant reported paying a person to fix their car. The person took their car in December of 2024 to complete the work and never returned it. 

In January 2020, the same person operated an automotive garage on Kilborn Way in Elliot Lake. There were numerous complainants who reported having their vehicles taken without consent, having their vehicles stolen, paying for repair work that was never done, and receiving false receipts. Numerous arrest warrants were issued in relation to these offences and failing to attend court.

Steven Givens, 54 years-old, of Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Theft over $5,000 - of a motor vehicle
  • Theft of motor vehicle - two counts
  • Take motor vehicle without consent - two counts
  • Fraud under $5,000 - four counts
  • Misleading receipt
  • Failure to attend court after having appeared - two counts

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on March 13, 2025.
