Driver accused of being impaired by drugs

ESPANOLA - On Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, officers from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were conducting Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) checks at Lee Valley Road and Government Road in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township, Ont.

At approximately 10:54 p.m., officers checked a passenger vehicle and observed the female driver exhibit signs of impairment. As a result of the investigation, Mitz Toulouse, age 43 from Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation, Ont. has been charged with:

  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act; and with
  • Driving while ability impaired - motor vehicle (Drug), contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, Ont. on Dec. 3, 2018.

The Manitoulin-Espanola OPP would like to remind the public that a charge of impairment by drugs involves all drugs, be it prescription, over-the-counter and those that are illegal. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.
