Driver faces impaired charges following RIDE program in Espanola

One person has been arrested and charged after being stopped at a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) program.

On July 13, 2024, shortly after 1 a.m., the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a R.I.D.E. program on Highway 6 near Clear Lake Road in Espanola. A vehicle entered the R.I.D.E. program and upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, David Schouten, 59-years-old from Espanola has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on Aug. 6, 2024.
