Driver charged with impaired after crash in Spanish

Police arrested and charged a driver with impaired driving while investigating a single motor vehicle collision.

On July 6, 2024, shortly after 2:30 p.m., members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a possible impaired driver on Trunk Road in the Town of Spanish.  

While speaking to the driver police determined alcohol had been consumed. The driver was arrested and transported to Espanola OPP detachment for further testing and once there, the accused refused to provide a breath sample.

As a result, Harlan Vachon, 25 years of age from Spanish was charged with: 

  • operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • failure or refusal to comply with demand

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Aug. 6, 2024.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days with the driver being issued a 90-day administrative drivers licence suspension.
