October 24, 1940 – September 6, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Darrell Jelly on September 6th 2024, at St Joseph’s Manor in Elliot Lake, ON. Darrell was born in Matachewan, ON, on October 24th 1940; second eldest son to the late Verdun Jelly and the late Helen Jelly (nee Hamilton). He is pre-deceased by brothers Don and William and survived by his brother Terry Jelly of Huntsville, ON. He married his high school sweetheart, Denise Delean (pre-deceased 2013) in Swastika (a village near Kirkland Lake) on March 4, 1961. Beloved father of Sherrie (Blair). Kyle (predeceased 2023) and Shawn. He had 9 grandchildren: Dylan, Colin, Karl, Kayzia, Autumn, Skyler, Amber, Kayla and Tanner and 10 great-grandchildren. Darrell and Denise moved to Elliot Lake in the early 1970’s and operated Towne Grocers and the Town and country Restaurant. They enjoyed donating to various causes and sponsoring local sports teams. Darrell was active in the Kinsmen, Kiwanis Clubs and the Chamber of Commerce for many years. In the late 1980’s they moved to Huntsville where they owned and operated Darlden Foods, later returning to Elliot Lake in their retirement years. Darrell loved to reminisce about the good old days. He spent his adolescent years in his beloved Kirkland Lake and took great pride in the hockey years when he goal-tended. That was in the days when a goalie did not wear a mask! He also enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing. He was often found in the kitchen cooking and cleaning. His Prime rib and Turkey dinners were a tradition for many years. The family wishes to sincerely thank all the wonderful staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Huron Lodge and St. Joseph’s Manor. Final care entrusted to Alternative Funeral Services. The family will have a private service at a later date. Darrell enjoyed helping those in need. In lieu of donations, please consider an act of kindness to those less fortunate. You will discover- as he did- the joy of giving!
