Maureen Conway (O'Neill)
It is with deep sorrow, we share the news of the passing of our mother, Maureen Conway (O’Neill), on January 16, 2024 in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Predeceased by her parents, George and Marion O'Neill (Gray) & sister Vina Kinnear (George Kinnear) she is survived by siblings George O'Neill (Joan) of Balloch, Scotland; Marion O'Neill of Glasgow, Scotland; and Caroline Joels of London, England. She will be missed by her children Kelly Conway (Casey Enright), Azilda; Tracey Conway, Sault Ste Marie; Christian Conway, Peterborough; Andrea Conway, Southampton; and Trisha Conway (Phil Volpe), Barhaven; as well as her grandchildren Holly, Sean and Leah.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1946, Maureen had many fond memories of spending summers at her grandmother’s in Aberdeen. In 1962, she immigrated to Canada where she first settled in Orangeville, Ontario, working as a Bank Teller. She married and later moved to Kakabeka Falls, Kirkland Lake before finally settling in Elliot Lake for the better part of 44 years.
When her children were young, Maureen volunteered at their schools in both Kirkland Lake and Elliot Lake. She was an avid reader, knitter and seamstress, often found working away while CBC radio hummed in the
background. She also worked at the Elliot Lake Day Care for a number of years as a cook. She loved the children, making sure they were well fed and had a good pair of mitts to keep them warm.
Once retired, she enjoyed spending time at the local dog park walking her pups and enjoying the company of friends, often followed by coffee at ‘Timmies’.
Thanks to Dr. Purzner for his compassion and care in supporting mum over the years and to the Nurses of the 1st and 3rd floor of St Joseph General Hospital over the past several weeks.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with close family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Maureen’s memory to an animal rescue of your choice.
And to you dear Mum, from your children please know,
"I carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)."
