The new boardwalk at Elliot Lake’s municipal boat launch is now open, said city CAO Dan Gagnon.

“The new boardwalk at the Elliot Lake boat launch is now open,” Gagnon said in a news release from the city. “One access ramp remains to be installed and some smaller site work remains, but the boardwalk is safe to use, and access has been re-opened.”

The city earlier this week had cautioned residents against using the boardwalk calling it a work site.

Early this morning residents were taking advantage of the boardwalk for walking, sitting and fishing.

“This is an exciting development for the community, and will be a great asset when completed,” Gagnon said.

The work has already attracted many people who have watched from the adjacent parking lot while the work on the new boardwalk was underway for the past two weeks. The boardwalk features, lighting and benches and is fully accessible.

“The new boardwalk is Phase 1 of the proposed boat launch project that is aimed at creating a tourism nodal point,” the city release stated. “Phase 2 of the project, contingent on funding, includes the installation of a 50-metre fishing pier, replacement boat launch docks, docking for additional boats and landscaping.”

Once the third access ramp is installed and final site tasks completed a more formal opening ceremony will be scheduled,” Gagnon said.
