Three new wildland fires confirmed in northeastern Ontario

Thirty-five active wildland fires are burning in Ontario's Northeast Fire Region, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry

The forest fire hazard was mostly low across northeastern Ontario on Thursday, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's firefighting division, although three new fires were confirmed in the past day.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Northeast Fire Region said there was a moderate fire hazard between Espanola and Gore Bay, and between Pembroke and the Kawartha Lakes.

Meanwhile, the fire hazard was high for the southeastern part of the region, including Renfrew and Bancroft.

The new fires confirmed from late Wednesday up until Thursday afternoon are:

  • Cochrane 51, a 3 hectare fire located about 163 km northwest of Fort Albany. This fire is being observed.
  • Parry Sound 13, a 0.1 hectare fire located about 2.9 km east of Highway 6 on the south end of Riley Lake or about 13.5 km southeast of Gravenhurst. This fire is under control.
  • Bancroft 4, a 0.1 hectare fire located about 25 km south east of Bancroft and 0.7 km west of Mephisto Lake. This fire is not under control.

One wildland "fire of note" for the Northeast Fire Region, according to the AFFES, is Hearst 18, located about 100 km northeast of Hearst or 80 km north of Kapuskasing. The fire was remapped Thursday afternoon at 1,637 hectares and is not under control.

Overall, as of late Thursday afternoon, there were 35 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region. Of these, three were under control, two were not under control, and 30 were being observed.
