Spanish resident faces arson charges after gas station fire

On Oct. 29, 2021, at approximately 1:30 p.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called by the Elliot Lake Fire Department regarding a person lighting fires near a gas station on Highway 108 in Elliot Lake.

Police attended and spoke to the store employee who also stated that the male entered the store and threatened to burn it down. The male was located walking away a short distance down the road. He was subsequently arrested.  

Todd Pineo, 45 years of age, from Spanish was charged with:

  • Uttering Threats - Damage Property, contrary to section 264.1(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Arson - Damage to Property, contrary to section 434 of the CC
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order - Other Than to Attend Court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on Oct. 31, 2021.
