UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm warning for Elliot Lake includes risk of high winds

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Elliot Lake area.

The warning was issued shortly after an Environment Canada severe thunderstorm watch warning of the risk of tornadoes and heavy wind gusts.

Following is the full updated alert issued by Environment Canada:

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for:

  • Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake, Ont. (049200)

Current details:
At 11:17 a.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Mewburn Lake to 20 km southeast of Wenebegon River Provincial Park, moving east at 45 km/h.

Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts.

Locations impacted include:
Mewburn Lake and Kindiogami Lake.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
