Trustees with Holy Trinity United Church made two sizeable donations to community organizations in Elliot Lake Monday; $56,163.41 to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation and $35,102.13 to the Emergency Foodbank.
The money was from the recent sale of the church to Elliot Lake. The sale marks the end of the church -- founded in 1956 -- which has now disbanded.
Church trustees Russell Foy, Nancy Jo Wannan and Dean Reile made the donations to the two community organizations. A fourth trustee Reverend Melody Duncason-Hales who is a regional supervisor for the church was also part of the donation.
“Reverend Melody has seen us through every step of the lengthy process of selling the church building, and the very difficult decision to disband the congregation of Holy Trinity United Church,” Foy said.
“This has been a very emotional time for our community of faith, but the one thing that every member agreed on was that any money available to donate must be in support of other United Churches in our area, and in community-based organizations in our hometown,” Foy added referring to donations going to Camp McDougall, St. Andrew’s church Blind River and St. Andrew’s church Massey. “We all need to see the Spirit of Holy Trinity at work for the citizens of Elliot Lake.”
As the new owners of the church building located across from the city hall, Elliot Lake is working on developing an operation plan for the former church.
