In recognition of his tireless commitment to civil rights, one of Elliot Lake’s most famous residents, lawyer and activist Douglas Elliott will be appointed to the prestigious Order of Canada.

He was named to the order on December 18.

Elliott, a prominent figure in the fight for equality, received this honour from the Right Honourable Governor General Mary Simon during a ceremony held in Ottawa.

Elliott has long been a champion for the 2SLGBTQI+ community, dedicating his career to advancing civil rights and protecting marginalized groups. His advocacy is perhaps best exemplified by his involvement in “The Purge,” a landmark class action lawsuit against the federal government.

This case, which sought reparations for the systemic discrimination faced by 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, highlighted the ongoing struggles against injustice and inequality. Elliott’s work not only brought attention to these issues but also paved the way for significant legal changes that have impacted countless lives.

Beyond his contributions to The Purge, Elliott also played a pivotal role in the fight for marriage equality in Canada. His legal expertise and unwavering commitment were instrumental in the successful push for benefits for same-sex marriage, a historic victory that symbolizes the progress made within the realm of 2SLGBTQI+ rights.

“I will always fight for the underdogs,” Elliott previously told Elliot Lake Today, encapsulating his passion for advocacy and his determination to uplift those whose voices have historically been marginalized. His work serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, not just for the 2SLGBTQI+ community, but for all those who believe in equality and justice.

Elliott joins an esteemed group of Canadians who will receive this honour, including, actor Ryan Reynolds, curler Kevin Martin, and Heather Rankin of the renowned band The Rankin Family.

Also among the notable appointees are journalist and author Diane Sims, geneticist David Chitayat and educator, Holocaust survivor, and author Mariette Rozen Doduck, each recognized for their outstanding contributions to society.

Elliott’s appointment to the Order of Canada is a reminder of the importance of advocacy for human rights. His legacy of service to justice will undoubtedly inspire future generations to stand up for what is right.
