Play outside in Elliot Lake with help from Jack's Ski and Bike Shack

Jack's Ski and Bike Shack has quickly become a cornerstone of the Elliot Lake community since its opening in 2022.

Jack's Ski and Bike Shack has quickly become a cornerstone of the Elliot Lake community since its opening in 2022. Located at 154 Ontario Street in Elliot Lake, owner Jack Peterson is a seasoned entrepreneur with a passion for cycling and skiing. The shop not only offers a diverse range of high-quality sports equipment but also fosters a vibrant outdoor culture in the area.

Peterson, who previously owned a successful bike and ski shop in Collingwood, was initially looking forward to retirement after selling his business. However, upon moving to his cottage in nearby Spanish, he quickly recognized a gap in the market for a bike and ski shop in Elliot Lake. With a deep-rooted love for the outdoors and a desire to contribute to the community, he decided to embark on a new adventure, leading to the establishment of Jack's Ski and Bike Shack.

The shop employs three full-time staff members, including Peterson’s wife, Karla Mills, and bike technician Cody Miller, along with one part-time employee. Together, they have created a welcoming environment that caters to both novice and experienced outdoor enthusiasts. The store features a selection of top-quality gear, with Norco bikes and Elan skis being their number one sellers, reflecting their commitment to providing local customers with the best products for the region’s terrain.

Elliot Lake is surrounded by lush landscapes and trails that are ideal for mountain biking, and Peterson has noted a significant demand for mountain bikes among the community. "We sell a lot of mountain bikes, which is appropriate for the surrounding area,” he stated, highlighting the alignment between the store’s offerings and the local landscape.

In addition to retail, Peterson is dedicated to enhancing the biking and skiing culture in Elliot Lake. He founded the Elliot Lake Cross Country Ski and Bike Club, which plays a vital role in maintaining the Bob Stirling Cross Country Ski Track. This initiative not only promotes outdoor activity but also encourages community involvement, making it easier for residents to engage in these sports.

Peterson recognizes a prevalent misconception among the community: many believe they can easily repair their own bikes. “Bikes, especially, have become more elaborate over time,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of professional maintenance. For those seeking expert assistance, bike tune-ups are offered at a competitive price of $50, while ski tune-ups are available for $30.

Among the many rewarding experiences he has encountered, Peterson recalls a particularly memorable moment involving a young autistic adult who received his first bike from the store. “I explained and showed him how the bike works, and now he rides it all over town,” he said, reflecting on the joy that comes with introducing young people to cycling.

Staying ahead of industry trends is crucial for Peterson. “Through constant research, I have my thumb on the pulse of the industry," he said. He actively listens to customer feedback and adapts his inventory to meet their demands. For those considering taking up biking or skiing, Peterson advises, “It’s not necessary to overspend; buy within your means and ability.”

A strong advocate for community involvement, Peterson has donated bikes, helmets, and ski equipment to various local charities, demonstrating his commitment to giving back. His long-term goals for the business include elevating the sports of biking and skiing within the community and eventually taking on his bike technician as a business partner.

Operating hours for Jack's Ski and Bike Shack are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With Peterson at the forefront, Jack's Ski and Bike Shack is not just a place to purchase equipment; it is a focal point for fostering a love of the outdoors and promoting an active lifestyle.
