THESSALON – An area nursing home and its charitable association are donating $5,000 to assist 156 families, couples, and individuals during the holiday season in hopes of bringing a brighter Christmas to the community.
The 'ABC' initiative, organized by Algoma Manor Nursing Home in Thessalon, involves donating grocery store gift cards to those who need a helping hand at this time of year.
Patti Mackenzie, the recreation manager at Algoma Manor, spearheaded the project.
“This is how the thought began on the 'ABC' initiative," Mackenzie said in a news release. "Every year, the recreation team discusses what we would like to see and what could be given back to the community. Our discussion led to today’s economy and what we felt would help people who may be struggling this holiday season.
"As we know, Christmas is a time of year that may not be easy or joyous for everyone. Due to the number of people in need, we could support the notion that a gift card would be the ideal solution for the diverse needs of 156 individuals and families. We are happy to do what we can to support the community we live in.”
With help from a local social service agency, they will be able to send gift cards to people who may need assistance during this holiday season.
“The gift cards are great," a recreation aide at Algoma Manor added. "It's nice to be able to choose rather than receive items that you may not be able to eat due to diet restrictions.”
The 'ABC' initiative gift cards are being sent out this week to ensure the receivers have enough time to shop for the holidays and to have a brighter Christmas.
