Elliot Lake and area residents can take a first-hand look at some of the impressive works of artists from northern Ontario.

Elliot Lake and area residents can take a first-hand look at some of the impressive works of artists from northern Ontario.

The Elliot Lake Arts Club is hosting an exhibit of art done by artists from across this part of the province, including the city’s own Linda Finn.

The exhibit is put on by the Northern Ontario Art Association (NOAA) as part of its 61st juried competition.

The pieces are on display at the gallery in the Lester B. Pearson civic centre and runs from Feb. 6 to 24 during the gallery’s regular opening hours Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Wednesday, arts club member Linda Duke was assisted by other members, including the club’s NOAA representative Lillian Asquith, setting up the display of some 40 paintings that garnered top honours among the 130 juried pieces.

The association’s objectives are to encourage original art, appreciation of artists and to further art education in northern communities.

The sampling of work being shown at the exhibit has a strong northern Ontario flavour as indicated in the pieces that include watercolour, oil, acrylic, collage and crayon. The pieces vary from landscapes, portraits, animals to some abstracts.

“This year there’s a wide variety of media and subject matter,” Duke said.

Some of the pieces are for sale. Anyone interested in purchasing a piece will have to wait for taking possession until the cross-community exhibit wraps up.

The NOAA is the umbrella group representing 15 independent studios, including the Elliot Lake Arts Club.

Duke, who was the club’s NOAA representative for 15 years, is proud of the display being hosted here.

She’s hoping the show will attract artists, budding artists and residents interested in seeing art from the northern part of the province.
