MNRF reporting one new active wildfire in northeast region

There was one new wildland fire confirmed in northeastern Ontario on Wednesday – a small fire not far from a key north-south highway.

Parry Sound 2 (PAR002) is a 0.1 hectare fire confirmed in the early evening next to Highway 69 (Highway 400), half a kilometre south of Clear Lake. It is not under control, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's firefighting division said.

There are currently three active wildland fires in the Northeast Fire Region, fire officials said.

The other two are:

  • Cochrane 8 (COC008), a 35 hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is about 57.5 km northwest of Moosonee.
  • Cochrane 9 (COC009), a 6,022 hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is east of Parson Lake and 8 km west of the Quebec border.

The fire hazard is moderate to high for most of region, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services said.

Areas north of Sault Ste. Marie are showing of low fire hazard, AFFES said, while Massey as well as an area north of Cochrane are showing an extreme hazard.
