In a powerful commitment to combat gender-based violence (GBV), the City of Elliot Lake will officially declare November 25 as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

This significant event, hosted by the Elliot Lake Women’s Group (ELWG), aims to raise awareness and foster community action against violence directed towards women.

The day will kick off with a ceremonial flag-raising at City Hall at 11:30 a.m., symbolizing a collective stand against GBV, not just in Elliot Lake but across the globe. The community is invited to join this important initiative and demonstrate their support for survivors of GBV.

In alignment with this event, the ELWG encourages participants to embrace the colour purple, a symbol of courage and resilience. Community members can purchase a special Wrapped In Courage Purple scarf for $50, prior to the event by contacting [email protected].

Each participant will receive a certificate of participation as a token of their commitment to this vital cause.

November is recognized as Woman Abuse Prevention Month, and it also marks the official launch of the Wrapped in Courage campaign, organized by the Ontario Association of Interval & Transition Houses (OAITH).

This campaign urges individuals across Ontario to wear purple scarves as a visible sign of solidarity with survivors of GBV.

By coming together, community members can create a strong support network, emphasizing that even simple actions can lead to meaningful change.

Every thread of action counts. By weaving their efforts together, people can make a significant impact on the lives of survivors and their children, fostering a community where everyone feels safe and valued.

To learn more about the Wrapped in Courage campaign and how to get involved, residents can visit www.wrappedincourage.ca. The campaign serves as a reminder that combating GBV requires a united front, and that each of us has a role to play in creating a safer environment for all.

As November 25 approaches, Elliot Lake stands poised to join the global movement to eliminate violence against women, showcasing the power of community action in the face of adversity. Together, let’s wrap our community in courage and support those who have bravely faced violence.
