The girls and boys volleyball teams from Elliot Lake’s Our Lady of Lourdes school posted top wins in a Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) tournament held recently in the city.
The tournament took place at the Elliot Lake’s Our Lady of Fatima/George Vanier gymnasium on Nov. 18 and was organized by Lourdes girls coach Vince Ucci and Fatima principal Andrew Chi.
It involved, in the east district volleyball tournament, teams from HSCDSB schools across the North Shore, including Sacred Heart in Espanola, St, Mary in Massey, St. Mary’s in Blind River and Lourdes and Fatima. A girls team from George Vanier also participated.
“Both the boys and girls teams from OLOL (Lourdes) were the successful champions – capturing undefeated solid titles,” said Lourdes vice principal Nadia Kovacs.
Coaching the girls team was Phil Ucci and coaching the boys team was Jennifer Smith.
The two teams will represent the East District at the HSCDSB Elementary Volleyball Tournament in Sault Ste. Marie at St. Mary's College this weekend.
"Our group of students from Grades 6, 7, and 8 were dedicated, motivated and came together as a team to become district champions. We are proud of their hard work and accomplishments," Ucci and Smith stated.
"These kids work so hard - practicing during and after school! It is so amazing to see them excel in an activity that they love! Attending the tournament this weekend will be an amazing experience for them," Kovacs added.
