More than than 100 chess enthusiasts took part in the second Collège Notre-Dame Chess Tournament on Dec. 4. Gathered in the gymnasium of this secondary school were grade 7 and 8 students from the 11 Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon elementary schools.

Ecole Catholique La Renaissance in Espanola was well represented at the tournament with a team of 10 young chess masters.

Each player had the opportunity to play five matches and faced players from other schools. The La Renaissance students represented well their school and stood out for their positive attitude, game strategies and their team spirit.

Teachers at La Renaissance agree initiating students to chess can be beneficial.

For example, studies show that chess enhances cognitive skills, including concentration, pattern recognition, decision making, mathematical thinking, problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and critical thinking. It also improves self-confidence and self-worth, attention span and increases memory capacity.

Organized by Collège Notre-Dame teacher André Maillet, the tournament was a great success thanks to the strategic and valuable support of student members of the CND Chess Club.

In addition to visiting several schools before the tournament to share their game strategies with elementary students and prepare them for this friendly competition, members of the CND Chess Club served as judges during the tournament.

Building on this success, Collège Notre-Dame wishes to see the third edition of the Chess Tournament attract a greater number of participants and allow many young chess masters to experience this great activity.
