Kapuskasing in northern Ontario is pronounced KA-puss-KAY-sing. People from the south can never seem to get it right.
But do you know the top 10 global cities Canadians have been pronouncing wrong and how to say them?
If you're an avid traveller or like to stay up-to-date on global news this year, you've likely faced the challenge of pronouncing certain international cities. But which locations around the world do Canadians find the hardest to pronounce?
To find out, entertainment site CanadaCasino has analyzed Google search data for global cities. The research looked at the combined totals for a variety of search terms such as ‘how to pronounce’ and ‘how to say’ each city, to reveal which are the most commonly mispronounced.
Taking the crown as the most commonly mispronounced Canadian city is Quebec. The city sees around 240,000 yearly searches for how to say its name properly. The correct pronunciation for non-natives is ‘kwuh-bek,’ while French speakers would say ‘keh-bek.’
In second place is Toronto, with 172,920 global searches per year for the correct way to say the city’s name. The right way to pronounce it for non-natives is ‘tuh-ron-tow,’ although locals will usually say ‘tuh-runno.’
With 138,000 yearly global searches, Ottawa is in third. The correct way to pronounce Canada’s capital city is ‘o-tuh-wuh.’
There must be something about Ontario, because two more of the province’s cities, Cambridge (135,960 searches) and Niagara Falls (82,440 searches), round off the top five most commonly mispronounced Canadian cities worldwide.
