Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School had a visit from Teresa Edwards of The Legacy of Hope Foundation (LHF), principal Andrew Chi said of the visit last Friday.

Edwards provided the school with some, “incredible resources and shared with us some valuable information about the residential school system.”

The information will be shared in the school’s native languages NSL studies program along with some impactful visuals Fatima will have on display until the new year.

“We are very appreciative of making this connection with the Legacy of Hope Foundation (LHF),” Chi said.

“By educating children about Indigenous history, we can build empathy and understanding and foster better relationships among all Canadians and Indigenous peoples,” said Edwards, who is the foundation’s executive director and in-house legal counsel. “I am so happy to be partnering with the Lady of Fatima elementary school to raise awareness and foster Reconciliation in the area.”

The LHF is a national Indigenous charitable organization with the mandate to educate and create awareness and understanding about the Residential School System. This includes the intergenerational impacts such as the removal of generations of Indigenous children from their families and the Sixties Scoop; and the post-traumatic stress disorders that many First Nations, Inuit, and Metis continue to experience, all while trying to address racism, foster empathy and understanding, and inspire action to improve the situation of Indigenous Peoples today.

The LHF supports the ongoing healing process of Residential School Survivors and their families, and seeks their input on projects that honour them. More information on the foundation can be found online.
