Hapkido kids program kicks off this winter

Unleash the inner Ninja and master the satisfying “'thwack' of expertly executed strikes

Get ready to unleash your inner ninja as the exciting world of martial arts comes to Elliot Lake, Cutler, Massey, and Blind River this winter.

Hapkido, a dynamic Korean martial art, is set to captivate children and teens with its exhilarating techniques that include lightning-fast kicks, gravity-defying leaps, and the satisfying “thwack” of expertly executed strikes.

Paul Morin, the owner and instructor of Hapkido Kids in Elliot Lake, has a rich history in martial arts that spans decades. He earned his black belt from Grandmaster Hak Sup Lee, who was a prominent figure in Northern Ontario’s martial arts community during the 90s and early 2000s.

Currently, Morin is training for his second-degree black belt under the guidance of Grandmaster Rudy Timmerman in Sault Ste Marie, while also preparing for a trip to Korea this March to deepen his training further.

Hapkido Kids, a charter school under the National Korean Martial Arts Association (NKMAA), is thriving with a dedicated team that includes one other black belt and four black belt candidates who assist in leading classes. The advanced students also have the opportunity to train monthly with GM Timmerman and other NKMAA masters, fostering a strong sense of community and commitment to excellence in martial arts.

Since its inception in 2019, Hapkido Kids has expanded its reach to multiple communities including Massey, Blind River, and Elliot Lake, particularly after taking over from the retired instructors Cecil and Linda Pierce.

With the support of ELNOS, the program has also introduced classes in Cutler for members of the Serpent River First Nation Band. Catering to three distinct age groups, the curriculum emphasizes not only traditional Hapkido techniques but also the importance of engagement through games and sparring sessions. Each class begins with a respectful bow-in and includes a comprehensive warm-up, followed by focused practice on various skills such as stances, strikes, and self-defence techniques.

The program encourages participation in tournaments, with many students opting to compete and even achieving recognition at prestigious events. Notably, the club received the “Best Supporting Club” award at a significant traditional martial arts tournament in Sudbury, showcasing the dedication and talent of its members.

The winter 2024 session of Hapkido Kids kicks off in January and will run for twelve action-packed weeks, providing a solid three months of focused training. “Whether your child is a budding martial artist or a seasoned veteran, their classes cater to every age group and skill level,” explained instructor Morin. From the littlest ninjas (ages five to six) to those aged 10 and up, there’s something for everyone.

Hapkido, which translates roughly to “the way of harmony and power,” was developed in the mid-20th century. This modern martial art combines elements from various traditional Korean disciplines with influences from Japanese jujutsu and other fighting styles.

Known for its fluid movements and adaptability, Hapkido emphasizes self-defence techniques that enable practitioners to defend against multiple attackers by using an opponent’s energy and movements against them. The practice also involves weapon training, meditation, and breathing techniques, making it a holistic approach to martial arts.

Classes are set to be held at multiple locations, ensuring that families across the region can easily participate.

For families interested in experiencing Hapkido firsthand, the program offers a fantastic opportunity to try one class completely free! This allows potential participants to feel the energy and camaraderie that comes with training in martial arts.

Registration for the full twelve-week session is $150 plus HST, which includes all grading costs, such as new belts and boards. For those enrolled in Cutler, the registration fee also covers optional tournament training, providing a comprehensive package for aspiring martial artists. The uniform and belt package itself is priced at $88.50 plus HST.

With its engaging curriculum, expert instructors, and a supportive community, Hapkido Kids is the perfect way for young people to build confidence, discipline, and self-defence skills.
