Mississauga First Nation is taking Ontario and Brookfield Renewable Energy to court next week over what it says is a 'backdoor attempt' at deregulating hydroelectric dams across the province.
A media release from the First Nation says the constitutional challenge stems from the "accumulating extreme impacts" from four hydroelectric dams on the Mississagi River that are owned by Brookfield and regulated by the province.
"The First Nation has never had impacts on its rights addressed," reads an excerpt of the release. "When the First Nation sought this accommodation a few years ago, Ontario slid a statutory amendment by the First Nation, purporting to excuse itself from needing to consult and accommodate on existing hydroelectric dams in the province ever again."
The court hearing is scheduled for June 16-17.
