Elliot Lake Fire Department received a call for a working fire at a residence on 62 Frobel Drive on Wednesday morning at 10:33 a.m.
Fire Chief John Thomas reports that smoke was visible when firefighters arrived on the scene.
He said the fire was extinguished by 11:01 a.m., but there was heavy fire damage to the kitchen and living room area of the unit and smoke damage throughout it.
"There were no injuries to report and estimated damage is $300,000," Thomas said in a media release. "The cause of the fire was a
box placed on the stove which accidentally turned the stove on."
He also reminded the public to be careful not to leave combustible items on stoves or near heat sources and to make sure a working smoke alarm is installed on every story and outside all sleeping areas of a residence.
