FedNor enriches tourism, economic development in Elliot Lake, North Shore

The funding announcement to support local businesses, tourism, and economic diversification, was made in Elliot Lake this morning

A packed room greeted Terry Sheehan, MP for Sault Ste. Marie at the Fireside Classic Grill this morning. Sheehan was in Elliot Lake to announce $1.7 million in funding for three initiatives, detailed in the FedNor news release below.

Sheehan was welcomed by Shawn Heard, General Manager of the East Algoma Community Futures Development Corporation (EACFDC) a federally supported not-for-profit, and board vice chair, Gail Murdock welcomed MP Sheehan and guests.

EACFDC is the recipient of $1.6 million of the funding. Sheehan told the guests, “This investment will help create advanced community economic development opportunities here in East Algoma and the North Shore."

"It will foster growth by fostering local expertise and by providing resources for people here in the region who understand economic development and have lived here all their life.”

“During the previous  five years as an example, [EACFDC has] provided assistance to over 50 businesses and helped create and maintain 100 jobs,” Sheehan said.

Heard later told the group that during their, close to four decades of history, “we’ve disbursed over $33 million in loans, leveraging a further $66 million in other investments, and have helped create or maintain close to 2,800 jobs.”

City of Elliot Lake, Manager of Economic Development, Steve Antunes, spoke about the importance of the $72,000 the funding will provide for a tourism strategy study.

“We’re a compact city that services a tourism market outside of that [area]. Promoting that adequately, is what we need to do,” Antunes said.

“And it’s because of generous finding from FedNor that is going to allow us to do that and really find a way to differentiate Elliot Lake from other communities.”

Mayor Andrew Wannan commented about the assistance of funding in support of the Fox Drive development.

“Fox Drive has been on our radar since we began our term, and I’m glad it’s starting to come to fruition … we’re very appreciative of all the support from the government,” he said.

Wannan: “Elliot Lake is the most beautiful city in the world, I think, and I’m glad you’re all here to help support us. Thank you.”

This project will provide the City of Elliot Lake with detailed activities and measurable goals on how to increase tourism. The remaining $24,000 will support the community in completing infrastructure service for a new industrial park development. This will include project design and electrical hook-up of a lift station.
