From October 24 to 27, the Elliot Lake Women’s Group Inc. will host the third annual Larry’s Place Homeless Challenge at 1 College Place. This impactful event which began in 2022, aims to break the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding homelessness while raising awareness, educating the community, and generating funds to help eradicate homelessness in Elliot Lake.

Larry’s Place, a vital resource in the community, provides support and services for men experiencing homelessness. Established to offer a safe haven and a fresh start, Larry’s Place has become a place of hope for many. The facility not only provides shelter but also offers programs aimed at reintegrating individuals into society, including job training, counselling, and life skills workshops.

During the Homeless Challenge, staff and community members will spend five days living in conditions similar to those faced by the unhoused population. This immersive experience is designed to foster empathy and understanding, allowing participants to gain firsthand insight into the daily struggles of those without stable housing.

“We want to challenge perceptions and encourage dialogue about homelessness,” said Rebecca Kelterborn a representative from Maplegate House for Women. “By living in these conditions, we hope to humanize the issue and inspire our community to take action.”

The event is not only a call to awareness but also a fundraising initiative. All proceeds from the Homeless Challenge will directly benefit Larry’s Place and its Fresh Start program for men, which aims to provide essential resources and support to the local unhoused population. Participants are encouraged to seek sponsorships to amplify their impact, and community members are invited to contribute in any way they can.

For those interested in participating or sponsoring a participant, the Elliot Lake Women’s Group encourages you to reach out via email at [email protected]. Additionally, donations can be made in lieu of participation.

As the Homeless Challenge approaches, the Elliot Lake Women’s Group Inc. invites everyone to join in this important initiative. Everyone’s efforts can work towards breaking down barriers, fostering understanding, and ultimately helping to end homelessness in the Elliot Lake community. Your support can make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
