With a ‘heat event’ in the forecast for the coming week, the Elliot Lake Masonic Lodge #698 has decided to open the Lodge building at 171 Spruce Ave. (across from the arena) to the public as a ‘cooling centre’.
The building will be open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 17 to 20.
Coffee and water will be provided and the building has wifi available.
The lodge building is a city heritage building, being the oldest existing commercial building in the city – it has, however, been updated significantly over the years, including with the recent addition of air conditioning.
"The lodge members believe that service to community is important, and being able to provide a cooling centre in the upcoming heat event is a perfect way to give back," the Masonic Lodge said in a news release.
There will be no charge to come to the cooling centre and the coffee and water have been sponsored by the members of the lodge, so are also being provided free of charge.
