Elliot Lake’s fire services are basking in the glow of a remarkable achievement as Fire Chief John Thomas has been named the recipient of the esteemed Hicks Morley Fire Chief of the Year Award

The announcement was made at the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs’ 2025 Labour Relations Seminar, which recognizes the significant contributions of fire leaders across the province.

Chief Thomas has been employed with the Elliot Lake Fire Services for 30 years, a tenure that is rare in today’s fast-paced job market. Under his stewardship, the department, which comprises 10 full-time firefighters and 17 part-time staff, has excelled in community safety, firefighter well-being, and professional development. His leadership style emphasizes teamwork and camaraderie, creating a supportive environment where every member feels valued and empowered.

The Hicks Morley Fire Chief of the Year Award is presented annually to fire chiefs who exhibit exceptional leadership, dedication, and a profound impact on their communities. Chief Thomas’s accomplishments in these areas have set a high standard for his peers and have earned him this distinguished recognition.
