Council approved a $176,000 contract for work to prevent groundwater flooding at the civic centre in the spring.
The contract was awarded to Topline Electric Limited through Tulloch Engineering, the firm that provided support services to the city on the project. Work is expected to begin soon with completion before the spring.
It’s a project supported by council and pegged as “much needed.”
Councillor Norman Mann acknowledged that “it is a significant amount for work.”
“It’s nice we’re getting this part of the civic centre resolved,” he added.
Councillor Mann also noted that some $900,000 has already been spent on the building’s heating and air conditioning system “part of that through grants.”
What had several councillors concerned was the lack of information available to council on the extent of the work,
“Does this pretty much cover everything. I just want to know ballpark if this covers everything we were looking at,” Councillor Luc Cyr said.
The councillor was told the work was meant to deal with groundwater flooding.
“In the future when we have these tenders that Tulloch be present so they can provide us with more background, Councillor Connie Nykyforak requested.
The concerns weren’t enough to persuade council to defer the matter, but council will be seeking more information from staff and possibly having a representative from Tulloch attend the next council meeting.
