A memo from the Manager of Economic Development, Steve Antunes, is expected to be received by Elliot Lake City Council this evening. The memo describes how, “after several months of work by Mr. [William] Elliott, Mr. [Rob] deBortoli, Mr. Antunes and Ms. Connell (representing the Rogers), a Three Million Dollar Charitable contribution towards the repair of the Arena was offered by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers.”
Written reports to council are typically provided with a verbal overview followed by comments and questions from council. And this item of council business is near the top of the agenda of tonight’s council meeting.
Earlier today, Deputy Mayor Charles Flintoff was interviewed about the donation on CBC radio.
Responding to CBC interviewer Marcus Schwabe’s question about the donation, Flintoff said, “I was absolutely ecstatic. I mean, the generosity of the Rogers family is phenomenal. You know, that's $3 million that helps every citizen in Elliot Lake, all the taxpayers, because that's $3 million we don't need to add to our tax base.”
Council’s formal acceptance will be livestreamed here from city hall this evening at 7 p.m.
