Closed session held to consult lawyers - we have given direction and we must now wait and see, says Acting Mayor Andrew Wannan

Elliot Lake council continues to not issue any public statements regarding two legal matters discussed in closed session at a special meeting Tuesday evening.

Prior to going into closed session, Councillor Charles Flintoff expressed hope that some resolution could be made public. Flintoff like his fellow councillors may be under some pressure to resolve the matters regarding legal standings involving former mayor Chris Patrie and former councillor Ed Pearce.

In the closed session, council was expected to get a legal update from city solicitors on the two matters.

Coun. Flintoff expressed interest in at least being open on the matters with Elliot Lake residents prior to going into the closed session or coming out.

“I would like to let the people of Elliot Lake know we didn’t ask for this we inherited this, and this council is going to be receiving solicitor-client advice and based on that we feel we need to go in closed session and that is our decision,” Councillor Charles Flintoff said. “Hopefully when we come out, we can be more transparent. This is uncharted territory for any council, and I just want to say we’re doing what we can to keep the public informed.”

“That was a privileged conversation in closed session, and we have given direction and we must now wait and see,” Acting Mayor Andrew Wannan said of the meeting.
