Council fills its final vacancy

Chris Patrie returns to council to take a seat

Elliot Lake council now has a full contingency of councillors after Chris Patrie was appointed Monday evening.

Patrie’s appointment was formally adopted by council, filling a vacancy left when former councillor Scot Reinhardt resigned in late September. Patrie took the oath of office prior to the Nov. 13 council meeting and administered by Mayor Dan Marchisella.

It was the second appointment to council this term. Councillor Ed Pearce was sworn in last month replacing former Councillor Candace Martin who resigned her seat in early September.

Under the Ontario Municipal Act, council has the option to appoint a person who agrees to take the councillor seat or hold a by-election. Council opted for appointments rather than go through the by-election process estimated to cost between $20,000 and $30,000.

Councillor Patrie was a member of council for two terms from 2006 to 2010 and 2010 to 2014.

The next municipal election will take place in October, 2018.
