After a four-year hiatus, the residents of Elliot Lake will once again unite to participate in The Coldest Night of the Year. This family-friendly fundraising walk, organized by the Elliot Lake Women’s Group, is characterized by its winter charm. The event is scheduled for the evening of February 22, 2025, and aims to support individuals facing hunger, hardship, and homelessness in Elliot Lake.
In 2018, the community of Elliot Lake successfully raised over $20,000 through Coldest Night of the Year, which was utilized to equip the newly established men’s shelter, Larry’s Place. This year, the objective is to raise an additional $20,000 to support local emergency shelters, including Larry’s Place Fresh Start Shelter for Men and Maplegate House for Women, which collectively assisted over 150 individuals last year. The majority of their services are sustained through community contributions.
Thousands of people will participate in a Canada-wide Coldest Night of the Year, with events occurring in 200 cities, towns, and communities across the nation. By walking together in the frigid night, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those living on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while simultaneously raising funds to support the initiatives of the Elliot Lake Women’s Group in providing essential assistance.
The Elliot Lake Women’s Group has served the community since 1982, and the funds raised during The Coldest Night of the Year will continue to facilitate access to safe and stable housing, advocacy services, nutritious meals, emotional, physical, spiritual, and social support, as well as a variety of other opportunities for growth and well-being.
